golferSt. Andrews is a small town located on the east coast in Fife, Scotland. It is accepted around the world as the place where the game of golf began. St. Andrews has a variety of castles, the University of St. Andrews, theaters and a variety of museums and more worth spending time seeing. There are a wide range of things for people to experience, and at least five attractions that must be seen.

1. St. Andrews Cathedral

The work of constructing St. Andrews Cathedral was started in 1158, and finished in 1318. It has three towers that are approximately 100 feet high. The majority of the grounds around the cathedral is free to the public. People willing to purchase a ticket can see an exhibition of stone carving, and see St. Rule’s Tower. People who walk up the tower’s 200 steps are rewarded with an impressive view of the town and its beaches.

2. The Old Course

This is recognized as the oldest golf course in the world. The game of golf has been played at this location since the 1400s. Visitors who play golf here always take the time to have their picture taken in front of the 700 year old Swilcan Bridge. The greens are available to the public, and many people will walk to the 1st and 18th greens.

3. St. Andrews Castle

After enduring over 400 years of wars and sieges St. Andrews Castle lay in ruins, but remains a fascinating place to visit. It’s been everything from a palace to a fortress and even a prison. A visitor’s center provides people with the castle’s history. Individuals who go here may be surprised by what they learn about its medieval past.

4. British Golf Museum

This is a museum that must be seen by every avid golfer. Visitors can see the earliest available film of a golf match made in 1898, as well highlights of the Open Championship as far back as 1914. It has many fascinating displays that cover every aspect of golf from its beginnings in the 1400s, to the current game of golf and how it’s played.

5. Byre Theatre

Theatretickets to the Byre Theatre provide a chance to see everything from professional, as well as amateur plays, operas, comedies and more. The original building was built in 1933, but was torn down in 1969 so a housing complex could be built. The current Byre Theatre was built in 1970. It also has a restaurant and a bar, and is a popular place for people to meet. The Byre Theatre is currently closed after going in to Administration.
